However, most great leaders share key traits which allow them to transform their organizations. The CIO Paradox: Is IT set up to fail?
Description CIOs run what may well be the toughest function in the business, with end-to-end responsibilities across multiple levels of infrastructure, data management, applications, business process and people. Yet you spend inordinate amounts of time justifying your existence, and once you have a seat at the senior executive table, your chair seems just a little lower than some others. This CIO Paradox has many dimensions, and some are immense: How is it that bad technology decisions can bring a company to its knees yet corporate boards rarely employ CIOs as directors? Even more pragmatically: How do CIOs manage the perennial conflict between risk mitigation and product innovation? In this town-hall-style session, Martha Heller, executive recruiter at ZRG Partners and CIO magazine columnist drives a group discussion around rethinking IT governance, re-educating CEOs on IT value and enabling the profession to get past the CIO paradox. For Pathways participants, this is a Leadership Bonus event. It is in addition to the teleconferences relating to one of the nine core competencies.

The Value of a Strong CIO-CTO Partnership
(Members only)
Type:
Roundtable Discussion Time: Jan 21st, '10, 11 am - 12 pm US/Eastern (GMT-5) Description One of the strategies for running a complex IT environment effectively is to divide and conquer through the strategic deployment of CIO and a CTO (chief technology officer). In some case the CTO runs the IT operations while the CIO focuses on strategy. In other situations, the CTO is charged with driving innovation and new product development while the CIO runs the enterprises information systems, which is the context for this discussion on making an effective CIO-CTO partnership. Dennis Stevens, CTO of SymCare PHS, explains how he built and sustains a strong and beneficial CIO-CTO relationship at his organization, where he is also vice president, Digital Solutions & Connectivity, Diabetes Franchise, Johnson & Johnson. Specific topics to be discussed include: - CIO-CTO working relationship: How to foster a good partnership - Responsibilities and focus of each C-level: CTO on product development and CIO on infrastructure - Things for CIOs to know when developing products - When and what to think about business models as a CIO and CTO This call is intended to be a small group discussion, limited to 10, with input expected from all participants. Dennis will start off the conversation highlighting his experience; please come prepared to share your own experiences and thoughts.

Description Cadbury plcs CIO Wayne Shurts has spearheaded many change management initiatives throughout his career at the $7.8 billion confectionery company, and as a consultant and at Nabisco. He has learned along the way that successful process change is only helped along by technology; what a leader really has to focus on is how he/she brings people up to speed. Using best practices from his successes as well as lessons learned from a few change management nightmares, Shurts developed a concrete methodology to help guide his team. In this discussion, Shurts will provide the change management framework as a takeaway and share real-life global examples of how business process change can be easier and more successful for your organization. For Pathways participants, this call fulfills the requirement of attending one leadership teleconference. It can be applied to the Change Leadership competency.

Mid-Market Rules for Playing the IT Vendor Pricing Game
Type:
Presentation & Discussion Time: Feb 16th, '10, 10 - 11 am US/Eastern (GMT-5) Description As companies emerge from the economic downturn and formulate IT re-investment strategies for 2010 and beyond, CIOs are determined to maximize business capacity and competitive advantage while maintaining tight control over IT spending. But how can mid-market IT executives anticipate and outmaneuver the large IT vendors' "pricing game" strategies? Based on feedback at the CIO The Year Ahead Summit in November, 2009, we welcome ClearEdge Partners' CEO Jack Garrahan, a 25-year veteran deal maker with deep enterprise sales and marketing experience to present on behalf of the Council. On this public call, Jack will walk through a case history specifically selected by our mid-market CIO members and you'll walk away with a better understanding of the methodologies, behaviors and techniques used so effectively by vendor sales teams. Through this renewed understanding of the typical highly disciplined, tightly aligned sales efforts targeting you and your company, you'll be better prepared to actively engage suppliers on a more level playing field.

Using best practices from his successes as well as lessons learned from a few change management nightmares, Shurts developed a concrete methodology to help guide his team. In this discussion, Shurts will provide the change management framework as a takeaway and share real-life global examples of how business process change can be easier and more successful for your organization.
